Are you sitting down? You should really be sitting down for this.
So apparently—and I can’t believe I’m about to write this—there are people in Joplin who believe that butterfly angels saved lives during the tornado. I’ll say that again—BUTTERFLY ANGELS!
I thought that CBS story was being, like, metaphorical, and the butterfly was meaningful to Joplin because it symbolized rebirth. But instead it’s because people literally believe that angels in the shape of butterflies flew down from butterfly heaven and saved lives.
Perhaps it’s best to just dive right in. This is from a blog post where the writer claims his sister sent him an email detailing a number of miraculous incidents.

After the tornado passed over them, the mother asked her daughter if she was OK.
The little girl said she was and said to her mother,
“Wasn’t it pretty?”

Her mother asked her what she meant.

She replied that she saw a lot of butterfly people.

“Did you see the butterfly people in the sky?  They were carrying people in the sky.”

They were going into the sky with people and there were a lot around the two of them.

Besides the butterfly story about the mother and child taking safety in a ditch, I have heard of two more.

The first comment on that story reads:

I heard of the Butterfly People from my daughter, who is working with several people that were affected by the Joplin, Mo Tornado, I had to Google it as soon as I heard. Those are amazing stories, my heart and prayers go out to all the people who were affected by the Tornado’s.

Here’s another story from a different blog. The story is attributed to an email forward.

As the tornado approached, a father and his two young children were outside in their yard. They did not have enough time to get in to the house for cover.  The father of the kids threw himself on top of his babies and they were on the ground.  The father dug his hands into the ground as the tornado plowed right over them. The soles of the shoes he was wearing, ripped right off.  He LOST the Soles to his SHOES!   Amazing!  The father and the children stood up, after the tornado moved on, UNHARMED.  The 4 year old little girl looked at her daddy and said “Daddy I saw that big butterfly holding you down.” Think about that…

And finally from a blog about “suepernal living”—which I keep reading as “super anal”—ends its post about the butterfly angel phenomenon in Joplin with this rumination.

The residents of Joplin have painted a beautiful Butterfly Angel Mural to commemorate their  experience. I was excited to see this story–what with being Supernal and all. Angels are part of our New Normal. Whenever the Supernal Friends and I get together nowadays, we sense the presence of angels. Paula can actually see them. (That’s one of her Supernal gifts.) I can feel my Blue Angel, as I’ve come to think of her. A huge presence. The air feels thicker. We somehow work together during our sessions sending healing energy.
I know that sounds really weird. So, it was very affirming to see a whole town on board with their Butterfly Angels. Hooray for Joplin, MO, a town steeped in the Christian tradition, sharing their awareness of spiritual protection. Oh yes, there’s so much more to our world than we can see with our physical eyes.

Think of that as you return home to Joplin this holiday season. You’re returning to “A WHOLE TOWN ON BOARD WITH BUTTERFLY ANGELS.” Ha ha, that’s your reputation now, Joplin! Congratulations. I’m already writing the city council to propose a statue of a butterfly angel as large as the Praying Hands be erected in Cunningham Park.
